The Mysterious Woman Who Gave Birth toads.
On the plains of Cala Saya, which in Spanish translates as "standing stones," where the wind whispered through the stone-built, thatched houses, and the dogs Sambo and Alemán broke the silence with their barking, lived a wealthy landowner named Don Eduardo Gutiérrez. He was a rich, respected, and beloved man. In contrast, his wife, Doña María Estaña, was known for her surly nature and stubborn desire to have grandchildren at all costs. Their only son, Gerónimo, a handsome and kind young man, was married to Silveria, the most beautiful woman in the region.

The young couple was enjoying their newlywed years, immersed in their frenzy. They weren't yet thinking about bringing children into the world, but Doña María was desperate to hold her grandson on her lap.

Every morning, Doña María asked her daughter-in-law if she was nauseous or craving anything while she knitted clothes for her future grandson. Her obsession with having a grandson was such that she even disrespected her son, insinuating that perhaps he wasn't man enough to father a child. However, Gerónimo was patient and waited for his wife to become pregnant at some point, thinking that everything would get better.

The years passed quickly, and Silveria was unable to conceive. After so many unsuccessful attempts to conceive, she was distressed. The most painful thing was seeing her mother-in-law sad, sometimes crying in the corners of the house. Doña María Estaña's desperation worried the family members. She began suggesting resorting to supernatural powers, consulting healers and shamans, but without success. She even went to the mountains to pray and ask the gods for help.

"A grandson for me, send me a grandson!" she repeated through tears.

"My years are slipping away like the waters of the Millu Jawira, the river on the ranch, and I still don't have any children to call me Grandma," Doña María wept and complained. "Be patient, woman. The wise men have spoken. Mother Earth will bless us soon," her husband, Don Eduardo, tried to calm her. However, the wait turned into despair.
