THE SAVIOR KITTEN AND THE WIDOWER WHO WANTED TO DIE __ New Story
One cold morning when it was snowing, Carmelo got up with the intention of ending it all. He looked out the window to see the lake where he would end his life, but to his surprise, he saw a tiny kitten shivering from the cold.
The animal, barely a baby, was weak, trembling uncontrollably and seeming to cry out for help.
Carmelo, in his eagerness to die, didn't want to take on the responsibility of caring for such a vulnerable creature. However, grief overcame him, and finally, he opened the door. He let the kitten in and left it near the stove.
"Just this once," he said.
Afterward, Carmelo went out with the intention of drowning himself in the lake, but his conscience bothered him for having left the cat. He stopped and, almost running, returned home and found the animal curled up on his bed, looking at him with eyes that stirred his deepest feelings.
Carmelo tried to kick him out of bed, but his heart wouldn't let him.
"It's okay, sleep here during the day," he murmured, though he couldn't avoid a pang of tenderness that made him feel a strange affection.
Don Carmelo wandered all day among his snow-covered fields, thinking about the cat's eyes. Night had already fallen, and his intention to die had been frustrated.
