In Charaña Peque, which in Spanish means "wet head," an Andean hamlet at the foot of snow-capped hills, but known for its green fields, a river, and rural houses, lived Doña Angélica and Don Ernesto, an elderly couple who had shared an entire life together.
They were both 68 years old, and although their love remained intact, loneliness had become their only companion.
They had had seven children, but these, seduced by modern life, had gone far away, to a city the elderly people didn't know.
The seven children had forgotten their parents, their land, and everything that had once held them together.
One afternoon, after years of absence, the children returned to their parents' house, not out of love but to claim their inheritance.
The old house, surrounded by acres of fertile land, and a few silver and gold jewels, were what interested them, treasures the elders had inherited from their ancestors that were valued at a great deal of money, and the children knew it.
"Father, Mother," said Roberto, the eldest son, coldly and in a humiliating voice, "we are not here to waste time. Just as you gave us life, you also have duties, and we have come to talk about what belongs to us. It is time to divide the inheritance."
Doña Angélica and Don Ernesto, sitting on their stone and clay chairs, upon which rested a worn sheepskin, looked at each other sadly. They knew this day would come, but they also knew it was not yet their time to leave.
"Dear children, we have not taught you this. The city has changed you, and we know we must divide the inheritance, but we are not dead yet," Ernesto replied in a trembling but firm voice.
"God is the one who will arrange our end, not you. In the meantime, we will continue walking through these lands that once saw you small and loving."
"The children, outraged, began to shout. Elena, the youngest, was the most aggressive.
But Mom and Dad, how can you be so mean and selfish? There's a lot of spending in the city, we need that money, and we rightfully deserve it!
