Iran was bombed, and its people erupted in cheers — this compels us to reexamine the true nature of what “national humiliation” really means.
Using the events in Iran as a starting point, this episode takes an in-depth look at the logical fallacies behind the Chinese Communist Party’s “Century of National Humiliation” narrative. The Qing dynasty was not a regime of the Han Chinese, but a colonial ruling power that entered China proper from beyond the Great Wall. The impact of the foreign powers on the Qing may, from the Han Chinese perspective, have been less a “national humiliation” than a form of “liberation.” By invoking the idea of the “Chinese nation” to blur ethnic boundaries, and by claiming the status of “heir” in order to appropriate the Qing empire’s legacy, the CCP is in effect “acknowledging a thief as its father.”
The irony is that while the CCP “acknowledges the Qing as its father,” it also condemns Taiwanese who refuse submission as people who have “forgotten their ancestors.” So who is it, really, that has forgotten its origins? The true nature of the Taiwan issue also becomes unmistakably clear within this framework.
Historical truth should not be obscured by nationalist slogans.
