For thousands of years, those in power have used the myth of a unified "Chinese nation" to control the narrative — but ancient artifacts tell a very different story.
During the Neolithic period, the Three River Basin was home to many distinct peoples with their own unique cultures: the pig-dragon of the Hongshan Culture in the northeast, the spirit mask of the Longshan Culture in Shandong, and the jade cong of the Liangzhu Culture in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. These strikingly different artifacts are silent but undeniable proof — there was never a single, continuous "Chinese nation" stretching back five thousand years.
The so-called "harmony of five ethnic groups" is nothing more than a sanitized retelling of a history written in conquest and extermination. From the Zhou dynasty's destruction of the Shang, to the Qin's brutal unification of rival states, to the Chinese Communist Party's systematic suppression of Uyghurs and Tibetans — and its open threats to annihilate Taiwan's pro-independence population — the logic of power in this region has never changed.
When the cold, lifeless expressions of soldiers marching in Beijing's military parade mirror the stone faces of the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an, one must ask: has anything truly changed in over two thousand years?
The truth of history has always been preserved in artifacts. They have never lied.
