he Qing dynasty’s Qianlong Emperor rejected Western democracy and science and arrogantly sealed the country off—only to pay the price in the fires of 1860. This talk pulls that “lesson of history” straight into the present: when power seeks only total control, democracy, freedom, human rights, and science are pushed outside the system.
Two centuries ago, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel pierced the nature of the structure with one line: “Only one person is free.” In that kind of order, law, morality, and religion blur into one—and in the end, all of them point back to the ruler’s will.
Yu Ying-shih goes further: the core of totalitarian rule pursues “absolute power” and the privileges that come with it, often sacrificing the broader public good. So what’s the way out? The conversation’s answer is blunt: democracy must include local self-government and human rights—and treating “unification” as the highest value is, at its core, a trampling of human rights.
Finally, the talk uses “reptile society → bird society” as a metaphor for civilization: do we fall back into a lawless world where the strong devour the weak—or do we defend the rule of law, freedom, and mutual respect? It’s a choice no one gets to dodge.
