This weekend I did a bit of a still life study, working in gouache which I am really enjoying learning how to use. Gouache is a lot like acrylic paint but it's a bit more portable and works on paper similarly to watercolor, unlike acrylic paint which tends to work best on canvas. Also unlike a lot of acrylic paint it isn't made of plastics so you can re-wet it and work the paint longer. I've been liking it quite thoroughly.
This isn't a traditional tutorial but I do talk a little bit about the process of the painting, and my process a little bit as well. Think of it as a bit of an indoor plein air using gouache.
Still life studies are a really good way to learn and help understand a lot of art fundamentals, perspective, shape, color, tone, depth, light, shadow, and more. I don't do these as often as I should, but I definitely like the process using gouache, it's a little less wildly than watercolor so I feel like I'm able to do a study a little faster and then can rework the same image with watercolor later using a slightly different technique.
