Watercolor is considered to be a very difficult medium to work with in the painting world, but understanding how to control the amount of water on your brush and how to make that work with the level of pigmentation you want for your project is a huge help!
Premixing your paints at the saturation level you'd like them to be can work. Drying your brush a little bit more before going directly on the paper will also help from things going too watery too fast.
Consistent colors within your layers as well as low water content will allow the layers to dry faster, allowing you to have less wait time between layers. But of course having a hair dryer nearby is always welcome!
