Ants (lat. Formicidae) are a family of insects from the superfamily Antidae, order Hymenoptera. They are social insects, forming 3 castes: females, males and workers. Females and males are winged, workers are wingless. The antennae are geniculate, 11-12-segmented in females and workers, 12-13-segmented in males, and 4-, 6-, or 10-segmented in a number of species. The main antennal segment (scape) is usually much longer than all the others. The posterior thorax (epinotum) is the first segment of the abdomen, fused with the metathorax. The abdomen itself is attached to the epinotum by a stalk formed by the first or second segments. Ants of some subfamilies (myrmicines, ponerines and others) have a developed sting. Wings with reduced venation.
