Turtles are unique reptiles known for their hard protective shell or carapace, which serves to protect them from predators and external threats. The shell consists of two parts: the upper (carapace) and the lower (plastron), connected by side plates. This shell develops from the ribs and spine of the turtle, which makes their anatomy very special.
Turtles appeared more than 200 million years ago, which makes them one of the oldest creatures on Earth. These reptiles live in a wide variety of habitats: from seas and oceans to fresh water bodies and dry deserts.
They are both aquatic and terrestrial, and their lifestyles can vary significantly. For example, sea turtles spend almost their entire lives in the water, returning to land only to lay eggs. Land turtles, on the other hand, prefer dry and warm conditions.
Turtles are long-lived, and some species can live for over 100 years. The diet of turtles depends on their species: some are herbivores, others are carnivores, and many are omnivores. They can eat plants, small animals, fish, and even carrion.
