So what is sober living? Well, there is a positive side and there is a darker side to sober living. I’m going to talk about both. First, I’m going to go with the positive side. In sober living, you are going to be with other people who are in a similar journey as you. So some are going to be further in their journey, may be 3-6-9 months sober and getting back to living life on life’s terms. Some of those people are going to be right where you are, and some are going to be a little bit behind you. It’s an environment with accountability, where you’re being tested. You have to check in each night. You have the accountability to make sure that you are hitting your meeting, you’re reading the big book, you’re doing the steps, you’re doing something to better yourself. That’s the great part about sober living.
The dark side of sober living that most people don’t talk about is, if it’s a bad sober living, in a negative environment, you get pulled down. It is much easier to get pulled down. Just think of it like this. If your friend is in a pool and asks you to pull him up it takes a lot more strength for you to grab that person and pull them up out of that pool. But it takes only a flip of the wrist for them to pull you down into the pool. So the dark side is, if it’s not a good sober living, if people aren’t testing, or if they’re trying to beat their tests, they’re not talking about recovery. They’re not talking about what they’re creating in life, going to school, or work. They’re not in a positive mindset. They’re in a negative mindset, in a place of entitlement, blame, taking and stealing. Then it is a very difficult place to stay sober.
So sober living can be a wonderful thing that helps lift you up, or it can be something that pulls you down.
