Here are 3 quick mindful techniques for anytime you feel triggered, or like you want to relapse.
#1. This one is really simple - just get out into nature. Many times, there’s a hustle and bustle, there’s stress, depression, all this stuff coming in. There’s something about getting grounded and rooted in nature. That’s the first thing I do whenever I need a break or some space. I go out into nature. No electronics.
#2. To become aware of what you’re focusing on. A lot of people say what you focus on, you feel. You take thoughts and turn them into emotions, which is energy. So by focusing on something completely different such as what are the highlights of life? We call them mind movies. There may have been great things that happened in the past, just memories, and some things that happened recently, and may be even somethings that haven’t happened yet, but in the future. Because what you focus on, you feel. If you’re focusing on all the crap and the anxiousness, the anxiety and the depression, then you’re going to feel the anxiousness, the anxiety and the depression. If you start focusing on the things you love, like I love playing sports, surfing, and when I focus on that, it brings me back to this rooted space.
#3. And the third thing is the breath. Breath is life. A very simple one is box breathing. So you just make a box within your mind - so you breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, out for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. Do five or six of those and it resets the neural connections, it resets the pathways. It takes us from chaos back to a soothing place.
