We’re going to bust some myths about recovery. One of the shows my son is watching right now is Myth Busters. They’ll take these cultural things that we think are true from word of mouth, and they put them to the test. And then they bust these myths wide open. I want to do the same thing, maybe not nearly as cool as blowing stuff up. To blow up some myths about addiction.

1. Relapsing is just part of the process
Really? That’s like saying getting hit by a car on a crosswalk is just part of learning how to crosswalk. No. why the hell would you want to get hit by a car? Why the hell would you want to relapse? By building a life that you love, a life by design, you don’t have to relapse. Relapsing is not part of the program. On the flip side, if you did relapse, and you’re coming off of a relapse, it can be part of your story, but it doesn’t need to be continually a part of your story. Myth busted.

2. It’s a will power thing.
If it was, I just gotta do some reps with my will power and I’ll be the strong will power dude. There’s something called the Decision Fatigue. It’s proven in all the Harvard and Stanford studies. Will power starts strong and gets weaker and weaker. It’s not just because it’s alcohol or drugs. You put sugar in front of a kid, which is the most addictive thing. And you sit there and tell them not to eat it. If you’re sitting in front of them they might be ok. Eventually the will power goes out and they eat it. It’s just called being a human being. So this thought process of outthinking addiction or using will power, that myth is busted. We want to share, we want to talk about it in the open, so that when our will power is gone, we’re among people who love and support us.

As we do the work, we tend to make better decisions. When I take care of myself, I’m going to make better decisions.
