A few months ago we shared a story about one of our alumni who talked about generational change. Basically, the whole lineage coming down was tied to addiction. At first, his thought process was like, this is who I am. Everything was passed down. A lot of times we fall into the victim mindset of passing down the pain. “Don’t you know what my lineage is? There’s no reason why I should be successful.” He decided to change this. He flipped it on its head. He said, “I’m no longer passing down the pain. I’m creating generational change by one decision that I made. And that is to live differently, to live the Recovery Way.” He stopped using to heal from addiction and within a year or two, he said that he started to notice the difference. His kids were treated differently because of how he was showing up in life. So many times we miss it. We’re not even aware of the consequences of our actions that are passed down the line. When I start making the decisions that I want to change, to become a better me, for not just myself but for my wife, for my kids, for my kids’ kids, and their kids, this is how we start to transform generational change. And it comes from one decision. This is the crazy part. We tend to pass down the poverty mindset. We’re really good at the scarcity mindset of how difficult life is, that drinking is in the genes, genetics vs. epigenetics, we can get into all that. But it just takes one decision to begin to live differently, to begin to take accountability and ownership to no longer drink, to sedate, to use. What happens is, that as I begin to live differently, I model differently to my kids. What’s crazy it that I no longer pass down the pain. I now pass down the purpose, the passion and the peace. I’m not saying that once you start living a life of recovery everything down the line is hunky-dory. What I am saying is that it begins to change the lineage, begins to change generations from your one decision. So I want to encourage you - don’t take this decision lightly. So many times, people think it’s one drink. When I take a step back, pause just for a moment, and make the conscious decision that I’m no longer going to do this just for me, but this one decision is going to change the entire line down my entire family, my kids, and my kids’ kids. That’s the beauty of this. So I’ll just give you some motivation that the decisions you’re making now are not just affecting you. They’re affecting your kids and your kids’ kids. When I can walk forward with that amount of gravity, I can actually shape my family tree differently, than it was shaped for me by making a decision to live differently.
