What is the motivation for movement of DPs in Raising constructions? Carnie claims that it comes from abstract Case. The idea that DPs are only licensed in specific positions in the tree (specifier of TP, complement of the V, complement to P). The case filter requires that DPs check their case features in local configurations. DP movement is triggered by Case, in combination with the EPP.
