Video 18.3: Incorporation
In this video Carnie presents the phenomenon of Incorporation, where direct objects appear in the middle of verbal structure. An account is given in terms of head to head movement of the N head into the the V head. This predicts that non-head material like adjectives will be stranded outside of the verb complex. And due to the Empty Category Principle (the requirement that moved elements c-commands the trace), it predicts that only object (not subjects) can incorporate.
