Video 16.4: Pseudogapping
This video compares two hypothesis on pseudogapping or non-constituent ellipsis, where only the direct object survives VP ellipsis. Lasnik's proposal that the direct object shifts into the specifer of AgrOP, thus escaping the ellipsis is presented and compared to Agbayani and Zoerner's hypothesis that pseudogapping is really Across the Board (ATB) movement of two verbal heads into Voice. Both hypotheses are shown to have shortcomings.
