Andrew Carnie presents Syntax: A Generative Introduction. 4th Edition, (2021) Wiley Blackwell.
Video 18.1 Languages With Looser Constituency
This video introduces the challenges that languages with much looser constituency pose to the configurational-centric approach taken throughout the rest of the book, where word order and constituency are taken as definitional in Syntax (through X-bar theory, and the movement rules for example). The languages talked about in chapter 18, are serious problems for such an approach. particularly if the mechanisms we have been using are part of universal grammar. This video introduces polysynthesis, incorporation, scrambling and non-configurationality. Each of these will be the topic of the next 4 videos.
