Cleveland Laing was born 29 September 1965 in Spanish Town, Jamaica and initially worked as a biology teacher before embarking on a career in music. He worked as a biology teacher at a Spanish Town School before embarking on a career in music working with sound systems such as Django. He initially performed as Ranking Citrus abbreviated to Citchie as he loved citrus fruits. However, with Stereo One he adopted the stage name Stitchie, later Lieutenant Stitchie.

By 1986 he began working with Prince Jammy who released his debut album, 'Wear Yuh Size' and following a series of hits he signed with Atlantic Records. Lieutenant Stitchie was one of the first dancehall artists to sign with a major label and released three albums, `The Governor', `Wild Jamaican Romances' and `Rude Boy'. Following his time with Atlantic Records he returned to Jamaica and continued working with the now named King Jammy amongst others.

In 1997 he was due to perform at Reggae Sumfest but was involved in an automobile accident en route although he still performed at the event. Soon after this experience he converted to Christianity and embarked on a gospel career. His first gospel release was, `To God Be The Glory' which led to further releases in a similar vein.

This led to a him being recognised by the Cornerstone Christian University in Orlando and the Dayspring Christian University in Ontario, Canada, the Gospel Hall of Fame as well as JARIA, IRAWMA and in 2021 he received the Order Of Distinction from the Jamaican Government.

He acknowledged his gratitude by announcing, “The Dancehall Governor is grateful to Yahweh firstly, then to the PM of Jamaica and all the powers that be, whom collectively made the decision to Award me the high National Award “The Order Of Distinction In The Rank Of Officer (OD). Thanks to all my supporters and detractors, yours truly REV. DR. CLEVE A. “LT. STITCHIE” LAING (OD),”
