Third World incorporate elements of R&B, funk and the sound of Philadelphia all fused with the sounds of Jamaican reggae. The band evovled when Michael "Ibo" Cooper and guitarist Stephen "Cat" Coore both played in the Alley Cats and Inner Circle. They then recruited bassist Richard Daley, drummer Carl Barovier and percussionist, the late, Irvin "Carrot" Jarrett and released their debut `Railroad Track'.
They signed with Island Records and supported the Bob Marley and the Wailers on their European tour which led to the release of the album `Third World' in 1976. The album included a cover of `Slavery Days', a wicked version of the legendary Burning Spear classic. However, a change in the line up included singer William "Bunny Rugs" Clarke and drummer Willie Stewart, who took over from Carl Barovier. A series of albums followed with Island including, `96 Degrees In The Shade', `Journey To Addis,' (that included our featured track, `Cool Meditation), `The Story's Been Told' and `Arise In Harmony.'
When Stevie Wonder appeared at the 1982 Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica he was joined on stage by Third World and Rita Marley to perform `Masterblaster (Jammin')' and a cover of `Redemption Song'. After the performance Stevie suggested that he wrote some material for the band's next album. By this time the group had signed with CBS ( (with whom they scored a Top Ten hit in the UK with our featured track) before being recruited by Mercury Records. The group followed the hit with Stevie Wonder's production of `Try Jah Love'' that also charted in the UK. They continued to release a series of albums including another homage to the Abyssinians with `Yim Mas Gan' culminating with the album `More Work To Be Done'.
