The History of the Belarmino Group
Belarmino de Ascenção Marta, have you ever heard of that name? And what does that name have to do with the bus you might use every day?
Belarmino de Ascenção Marta is the name of one of the biggest businessmen in the transportation industry in Brazil.
Of Portuguese origin and soft-spoken, the friendly businessman is the main player in the public transportation sector in Campinas.
The bus company owner is from the village of Vilar do Rei, in the Trás-os-Montes province of Portugal. Born in 1937, Belarmino, after a 38-day voyage on the ship Giovanni C, disembarked at the Port of Santos in November 1952.
Two years later, at the age of 17, he and his brother Antônio Joaquim Marta set up their own business.
Belarmino envisioned the population's transportation needs and that transportation would be a good business, in addition to helping the city of São Paulo grow.
Encouraged by a brother-in-law, he entered the business by participating in Auto Viação Brasil Luxo in the capital.
The Belarmino Group, also known as the Bamcaf Group, is a Brazilian conglomerate of companies operating in the transportation, tourism, and services sectors, currently one of the largest public transportation groups in Brazil.
The group was founded by the Portuguese businessman, later based in Brazil, Belarmino de Ascenção Marta, in 1961, and its first company was Auto Viação Brasil Luxo, which started with only 14 buses in its entire fleet. Currently, the group has more than 4,000 buses, and its headquarters are located in the city of Osasco in São Paulo.
The Group operates mainly in the state of São Paulo, especially in the metropolitan region of Campinas, where it is a leader, employs more than 20,000 people, and is the second largest transportation group in the state of São Paulo and fourth nationally.
