A submarine, also known as a sub for short, is a vessel or ship that can go underwater. They are mainly used by the military and scientists. Military personnel used submarines in wartimes to attack enemy ships and other submarines. Scientists send submarines under the water to explore our oceans.
Submarines have ballast tanks located at the bottom of the sub. These tanks fill with water which gives the submarine the weight it needs to sink.
Important parts of the submarine include:
1. Ballast tanks - allows the sub to dive and surface
2. Engine - allows the sub to move through the ocean
3. Propellers - push the sub through the water
4. Equipment - used to find the way through the ocean
5. Crew - people onboard to control the sub
The submarine was first invented by Dutch inventor, Cornelis Drebbel in 1620. Learn all about submarines in this short video.
