Powerful MRI is Changing Lives for Epilepsy Patients in Missouri
University of Missouri Health Care is using the most powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner in the state to individualize treatment for patients with epilepsy. The 7-Tesla (7T) MRI is one of only a few in the nation, and the only one in the state.
“The 7-Tesla is a game changer. It gives us incredible detail that we don't necessarily have in other types of scans,” said Komal Ashraf, DO, MU Health Care Epiloptologist.
Ashraf said it’s type of detail that can diagnose and help treat diseases that can be very difficult to diagnose, including epilepsy, a neurological condition that causes seizures and other health problems. The 7T MRI helped change the lives of two Missourians with epilepsy, by finding answers. Dylan Davenport from Jefferson City and Becky Gooch from Kirksville are among almost three million adults in the U.S. diagnosed with epilepsy. Dylan and Becky came to MU Health Care with epilepsy that had resisted treatment for years.
