Chorusing Cicadas Sound the Alarm About All Loud Noise Exposures and Protecting Your Hearing
Brood 19, the largest and noisiest 13-year brood of cicadas in the region, returned to put on its impressive display. This 13-year brood is part of the double emergence, when two particular broods of cicadas that emerge every 13 and 17 years are above ground together for the first time since 1803. The cicadas song is very loud.
“It gives you that sensation of movement, where you have different patches chorusing at different times,” said Kasey Fowler-Finn, PhD, Associate Professor of Biology at Saint Louis University.
The mating call happened to be extremely loud.
“It’s sort of like a hair dryer,” she said.
The loudness had also been compared to many more manmade things.
“It’s like a chainsaw,” said Dave Harris, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Audiology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
Harris said the song from the chorusing cicadas can reach the human ear at 100 decibels, or more. Harris discusses dangerous noises, hearing loss, tinnitus and awareness.
