In this lesson, I’m sharing with you one of the biggest game changing functions of LinkedIn: groups.
Belonging to them, being active in them, and specifically, creating them.
In his 1937 book “Think and Grow Rich“, Napoleon Hill introduced something called the Mastermind Principle.
He explained the principle as:
“The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony.” and wrote that “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind, also known as the Mastermind.”
Creating a Group on LinkedIn is one of the best ways I know of to bring forth this third mind.
LinkedIn Groups are extremely useful as you are building your own community where you create the rules and everything you post is visible to your audience without any Linkedin algorithm limitation.
When you’re the owner of a LinkedIn Group, you decide who can join and who not, and those who you invited or accepted can also share in the Group (within your Group rules).
A Group is as important as a good brand, so next time you connect with someone you can tell them that you are the founder of group X in your niche.
This will establish your expertise and help establish trust.
The mechanics of creating a group on LinkedIn are easy enough.
If you go to your homepage and click on ‘Groups’, you’ll be given an option to ‘Create group’.
A small page will open, and this is where you will add your Group’s details, like its name, description and location.
Now that you’ve created your group, you need to start adding and engaging members.
This can be tricky, but here are some of my favourite ways to encourage the growth and success of your LinkedIn Group:
Welcome new members by name and encourage them to introduce themselves
Share the Group’s guidelines so members can confidently participate
Engage with members’ posts
And send direct messages to members to make long-lasting connections
I’m sure you know that a profession, especially if you’re an entrepreneur, can be an isolating and lonely endeavor.
It’s not uncommon to have the feeling of, “There’s got to be a better way,” or “Am I the only one that feels this way?”
Finding ourselves in the company of others wrestling through similar questions in the same niche is so encouraging, but this experience isn’t limited to Linkedin Groups.
Any time you gather a group of people around a common value, challenge, or purpose, great things happen. There’s a lot to unpack here.
In his book The Accidental Creative, Todd Henry talks about another interesting aspect of social groups; namely that relationships are key to growing personally and professionally.
He says that:
“Many of the greatest creatives throughout history have gathered in small groups to stay focused and engaged, and the practice continues to benefit those who go to the effort to instill it. These small groups can stoke your passion, help you stay aligned with what matters most, inspire and give you new ideas or directions for projects, and simply feed you emotionally in ways you may be lacking.” — Todd Henry
So, yes, this lesson is about LinkedIn Groups.
But it is also a reminder that you don’t need to go it alone.
In fact, you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take advantage of tools that allow you to congregate with people in your niche.
This congregation or Group is ideally composed of other peers that have a similar desire and openness to grow.
Whether the common thread of the group is around a niche, or simply a support group for like-minded people, the point is to help one another navigate the challenges of creative work.
The simple act of gathering is powerful in itself, but there are far reaching benefits to being a part of something like this.
You will see the magic ingredient when people show up - normal people that are tired of being pushed around by life and have similar ideas about moving forward.
