# 34. IV Colistin Administration by IVPB / IV pump for MDROs like MRSA and Acinetobacter.
Gram-negative MDROs need a tough drug to over power them, but you'll need to watch out for nephrotoxicity, plus neurotoxic issues. Yes folks, kidney and brain related issues kept Colistin out of most Hospitals for 4 decades after its initial release in 1959. But with Multi resistant organisms in our lungs, wounds and other places, Colistin is back in use.
Colistin is very effective if the nurses give the full dose. Sadly, most RNs give only 70 percent of the dose (when from a 100 CC bag).
Please make sure that you give the entire dose, or your patient may become resistant to ALL antibiotics.
