Posture and grips make a huge difference with this throw. Sometimes it is said that Osoto-gari is the first throw you learn and the last one you master.
I loved this throw when I first learned the static version of it, but it was very frustrating trying to apply it while in motion. After awhile, I discovered and was taught some subtilties that made a huge difference. But still, that was a Judo vs Judo stance. Later, trying to apply the upright version in Jiu-jitsu situations, I would fail. I learned a different grip that was used by a Korean team while I was in Russia for the International Children's Games of Asia. The high collar/low cuff grip shut down any stiff arm attempt, created a sharper angle of attack, and broader off balance against the opponent.
