Have you ever felt a sharp pain in the back of your thigh while running or playing soccer? Be careful, it could be a sign of a hamstring injury. Hamstring injuries often occur during sudden, forceful movements, such as sprinting or jumping, that stretch your tendons or muscles.

The hamstrings consist of three muscles that run along the back of the thigh from the hip to below the knee. These muscles function to straighten the leg behind the body and to bend the knee. The hamstrings are not used much when standing or walking, but are very active during activities that bend the knee, such as running and jumping.

Hamstring injuries usually cause sudden pain. You may also feel a "popping" or tearing sensation. Swelling and pain usually occur several hours after the injury. Bruising or discoloration along the back of the leg, as well as muscle weakness or an inability to put weight on the injured leg, may also occur.

Initial treatment for an injury is aimed at reducing pain and swelling. Rest from strenuous activity to allow the injury to heal. Apply ice several times a day to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Additionally, you can use a cane or crutches to avoid putting full weight on the injured leg.
However, if your hamstring injury doesn't improve, immediately consult Dr. Christian Silas, Sp.OT (K) at Pondok Indah Hospital - Puri Indah. Call (021) 2569 5200 Ext. 2 or visit the following link to make an appointment and view the doctor's schedule: https://bit.ly/4bBaJK0

If you experience a hamstring injury, stop exercising immediately and consult a doctor. Remember, prevention is better than complications.
