Bow-shaped legs, or genu varum, are a leg abnormality that usually begins to appear in toddlers. This is commonly seen at an early age, as bow-shaped legs generally gradually straighten with age. However, in some cases, bow-shaped legs do not gradually straighten and instead become more crooked.

The causes of bow-shaped legs can be due to incorrect sleeping and/or sitting positions, incorrect carrying techniques, or incorrect diapering. Other factors include nutritional intake, particularly calcium and vitamin D3, hormonal abnormalities, and, most commonly, abnormalities in the growth plates of the bones.

If your child is under 2 years old and has bow-shaped legs, don't worry too much. This condition is often a normal part of development. However, if the condition persists after 2 years of age or even worsens, it's important to consult a doctor immediately.

You can consult with Dr. Faisal Mi'raj, Sp.OT, about your child's bow-shaped legs. (K), Orthopedic Specialist Consultant for Pediatric Orthopedics, Limb Lengthening, and Reconstruction at Pondok Indah Hospital - Pondok Indah via (021) 7657525 Ext. 2 or make an appointment via https://bit.ly/3W5R5PN
