How Safe Are Driverless Cars?
"Autonomous vehicles are 100% safe" is a common belief about self driving cars. However, is this really the case? The topic of safety of driverless vehicles is complicated, and proving the safety of autonomous vehicles isn't so straight forward. In this video, I hope to show you what to expect from the safety of autonomous vehicles and why we may need to get creative about how we prove their safety.
Waymo One are currently conducting public road trials of their Waymo autonomous vehicles in Chandler, East Valley, Phoenix, Arizona. How close are they to proving the safety of their vehicles? How is Tesla FSD, Cruise, Baidu's Apollo, and Apple Car in comparison?
I'm a self driving car engineer with a PhD, and I want to talk you through my views on how to determine the safety of autonomous vehicles and make sure we reasonably mitigate the risks these vehicles might introduce onto our roads.
