Learn how to remove white background of an image to make it transparent in Gimp 2.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. The steps are the same for windows also.

STEPS.
---------

1. Import the image to Gimp
2. Go to Colors menu and select "Color to Alpha"
3. Click OK

Now you have a transparent layer. If you want to use it within Gimp you can add the layer on top of other layers. If you want to export it the steps are:

1. Go to File menu and select Export As
2. Type the file name with .png extension.
3. Click Export
4. Click Export again.
