Ubuntu 14.04 - How to Show / Hide Hidden Files and Folders
Learn how to show or hide hidden files & folders in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Steps should be the same for all recent versions of Ubuntu.
METHOD 1

1) Press Ctrl + H to toggle display of hidden files
METHOD 2
---------------
1) Go to Edit menu and click on Preferences
2) Check the checkbox "Show hidden and backup files"
3) Close the "Files Preferences" window.
NOTE: The changes done through Ctrl + H is temporary. For permanent settings use the checkbox in file preferences window.
