Im Hinterland des Kantons Appenzell Ausserrhoden an der Strasse zwischen Herisau und Appenzell erstreckt sich die Gemeinde Hundwil (788 m ü. M.) mit der Hundwiler Höhi ( 1'305 m ü. M.). Der bekannteste und höchste Berg auf Gemeindegebiet ist der Säntis (2'502 m ü. M.). Von der Talstation Schwägalp aus fährt die Luftseilbahn Schwägalp-Säntis zur Spitze.
Nachbargemeinden sind Urnäsch, Waldstatt, Herisau und Stein AR im Kanton Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Schlatt-Haslen, Gonten und Schwende im Kanton Appenzell Innerrhoden sowie Wildhaus und Nesslau-Krummenau (Kanton St. Gallen).
Hundwil (788 m above sea level) is a municipality in the hinterland of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It is located by the road between Herisau and Appenzell. Close to Hundwill lies the Hundwiler Höhi at an altitude of 1,305 m above sea level. The most famous and highest mountain in the municipal area of Hundwil is the Säntis (2,502 m above sea level), which Hundwil shares with other municipalities. The Schwägalp valley station of the Schwägalp-Säntis aerial cableway also belongs to the widespread municipality of Hundwil.
