Appenzell (780 m ü. M.), politisches und wirtschaftliches Zentrum des Kantons Appenzell Innerrhoden am Fuss des Alpsteinmassivs, ist für Besucher aus aller Welt ein Inbegriff der ländlichen Schweiz. Das Ortsbild prägen bunt bemalte Holzhäuser: prächtiges bäuerliches Barock mit vielen Schnörkeln und Giebelschwüngen, neu erbaut nach einem verheerenden Grossfeuer 1560.
Appenzell ist von Gossau SG, Altstätten sowie St. Gallen aus bequem zu erreichen als Ausgangspunkt für ausgedehnte Wanderungen ins Alpsteingebiet.
Appenzell (780 m above sea level) is the capital of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden and is situated at the foot of the Alpstein massif. The districts (municipalities) of Appenzell, Schwende and Rüte share the village, whereas the largest part of the village belongs to the district of Appenzell. The image of the village is characterized by buildings from the time after the fire in 1560. Painted wooden buildings with curved or broken gables give the village a special charm. Appenzell is a well-known tourist location. It can be reached easily from Gossau SG, Altstätten and St. Gallen and is a good starting point for hiking tours to the Alpstein region.
