Avalanches are a major concern, especially in Canada, where they rank as a leading cause of fatalities. However, groundbreaking research could soon change the way we predict these deadly events. ❄️
🔍 Researchers are utilizing simulated snow cover models to identify weak snow layers that could lead to avalanches. This innovative technology, developed over 16 years by experts at Simon Fraser University, promises to enhance the accuracy of avalanche hazard predictions.
🌍 In the Himalayas, satellite imagery is being used to monitor avalanche threats, offering a crucial link between events in 2016 and 2021. A dedicated team from the University of Aberdeen is at the forefront of this research, exploring the potential of remote sensing to prevent disasters in these remote and challenging environments.
🔬 While field observations remain essential, remote sensing technology offers a promising tool for improving avalanche prediction and safety across the globe.

About UNDRR:
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has a big ambition: to help decision-makers across the globe better understand and act on risk. At UNDRR, we believe there is no such thing as a natural disaster. A natural hazard, such as a hurricane, earthquake, tsunami, or flood, only becomes a disaster when it impacts a community that is not adequately protected and whose population is vulnerable as a result of poverty, exclusion, or social disadvantage. We envision a world where disasters no longer threaten the well-being of people and the future of the planet. Sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda cannot be achieved without working towards the goal of building resilience.
