A quick little wander up into the front country of the Ruahine Ranges on Friday afternoon. It didn't take too long to find a willing participant to hitch a free ride back to town destined for the BBQ.
Deer was shot at a distance of 597 yards. Rifle is a Remington Model 7 chambered in the awesome 7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum, SAUM for short. Its shooting a 162 Amax at 3,050 fps. Scope is a Sightron S-Tac 4-20x50, i dialed 8.7 moa to allow for elavation adjustment, and i didnt think there would be any significant wind drift so held centre shoulder, i was wrong, there was actually a wind drift from left to right stronger than i thought (see the white seed fairies blowing across the image) resulting in the bullet drifting to the right and hitting the deer forward of the shoulder at the base of the neck, but as you will see, the deer dropped on the spot.
