Dr. Elham Mahmoudi, an Associate Professor of Health Economics from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, MI, reviews her article appearing in the December 2022 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where utilizing national private administrative claims data over a 10 year period between 2007 and 2017, and 4 years of follow up, found adults with pediatric-onset disabilities were at a greater risk for potentially preventable hospitalizations than the general population. For example, persons with spina bifida were 6 times more likely to have a potentially preventable hospitalization due to urinary tract infections. Dr. Mahmoudi suggests providing better access to preventive care and health-promoting services, especially for respiratory and urinary outcomes, may reduce potentially preventable hospitalization risk among this patient population.
