William White, MD, from the University of Connecticut Cardiology Center in Farmington, CT, reviews his article appearing in the November 2024 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he compared intermediate-term risk of new-onset hypertension between normotensive patients with narcolepsy initiating sodium oxybate and those not initiating sodium oxybate. Dr. White concluded that Sodium oxybate use was associated with new-onset hypertension diagnosis or antihypertensive medication initiation in normotensive patients with narcolepsy, and recommends that clinicians consider recommending patients with narcolepsy to incorporate new antihypertensive medications containing lower sodium content to reduce the risk of hypertension.
