Howard Hanson (1896-1981): Bold Island Suite (1961)
Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell
Recorded at the 1962 premier performance
Movements:
1. Birds of the Sea (0:00)
2. Summer Seascapes (7:31)
3. God in Nature (16:42)
This lovely work has been given a modern recording by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra (Telarc label), but I upload this live concert recording for comparison. Alongside the Hanson symphonies, this three movement suite stands near the epitome of modern Romanticism from one of America's greatest composers, himself being a champion and promoter of American composers. What is most amazing is that this work had never been commercially issued before the Telarc recording.
