American composer Edward Burlingame Hill is finally receiving a modicum of musical exposure. Many of his works recorded on LP and on transcription and private recordings are beginning to see the light of day on YouTube. Also, the Austin Symphony Orchestra (Anton Nel, pianist, the Austin Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Bay) has issued a premiere recording of Hill's 4th Symphony, his two Concertinos for Piano and Orchestra and his Divertimento for Piano and Orchestra (Bridge CD 1443).
This uploaded work, once a regular staple on many American concert performances, was re-discovered and recorded by Karl Krueger back in the 1960's as a part of the subscription series of LP's bringing back once popular concert works by the "Lost Generation" of America's musical past. The Society for the Preservation of the American Musical Heritage was the name of the organization and they issued dozens of LP's of music by composers such as George Chadwick, John Alden Carpenter, Horatio Parker, Edward Burlingame Hill, and many others. Most of those recording have been reissued by Bridge Records and may be purchased from most internet recording outlets. This piece, the Stevensonia Suite, has also been reissued on Bridge 9190 along with many more American orchestral works in the society's collection.
The Stevensonia Suite No. 1, Op 24 (1917) takes its inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson's poems in "A Child's Garden of Verses." Each of the four movement titles are listed below:
