A 26-year-old Syrian asylum seeker has turned himself in to German police, admitting responsibility for the knife attack in Solingen that left three people dead and eight others injured during a festival celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary, authorities reported early Sunday.
Dusseldorf police issued a statement confirming the man's admission and his prior arrest, saying, "His involvement in the crime is currently under intensive investigation." The suspect, a Syrian citizen, had applied for asylum in Germany, police confirmed to the Associated Press.
On Saturday, the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the attacker targeted Christians and acted as a "soldier of the Islamic State" to avenge Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere. However, this claim has not yet been verified.
