Why was the second Death Star built in only four years when it took more than nineteen to build the first? It’s because the holdup on the first Death Star was the development of a superlaser that could destroy an entire planet. It was new technology, developed so secretly that even the people working on it didn’t know its true purpose. When Galen Erso learned that he was building a weapon, he went into hiding and the project was stalled. Of course he was eventually captured by Orson Krennic and forced to complete the superlaser. So the final problem was finally solved, and the Death Star wars completed. For, like, a day, and then the Rebels blew it up. But building a second was just a matter of gathering resources. The research and development phase was done, so constructing a new one, while annoying and still no easy feat, was able to be completed much faster.
