ABOUT FINDING FONDNESS
Commissioned by ABC classic as part of the 2023 composer commission fund and recorded in the ABC Studio’s in Ultimo alongside Sally Walker, Finding Fondness is a collection of 5 flute duets exploring The Emerald Ruby’s (Jennifer Hankin) lived experience as a late diagnosed Autistic individual. This body of work is an emotionally vulnerable sound based exploration of an increasingly common experience. Taking influence from Hankin’s vast and varied musical history “Finding Fondness” redefines the aesthetic and technical expectations of music made by two flutes.
ABOUT THE TRACK: It's not an exaggeration to say the “world-class” government systems that are supposed to insure equal opportunity have failed me at every turn. I didn't notice at first, believing the myths about hard work and meritocracy, an illusion shattered after years of trying at 150% only to end up living in a mouldy apartment on a poverty wage with increasingly grim career prospects. I've watched those in power who could truly level the playing field move issues with our social safety nets from the desk of one prime minister to another, failing to recognise a shiny rebrand doesn't fix a deeply entrenched systemic problem.
With lyrical melodies that float on a solemn mood, this piece fosters a gentle melancholic introspection. This movement ends with a hint of cautious optimism swirling between a subtle harmony change within the main thematic cell.
