ABOUT "PARALYSIS SPIRALS":
Journeying down a paralysis spiral can inflate a seemingly inconsequential 10 minute task into a monolith that spans several moon cycles. I am familiar with these spirals, they twist into each other like spaghetti, forcing a level of panicked inaction wearing the appearance of a bad excuse. Even now, I only recognise a paralysis spiral when my life is fully intwined in it’s knots. Relief and Recovery is unpredictable, however I always find a level of comfort in the knowledge that every spiral is untangled with time.
Much of this piece finds its own way to spiral, from the harmonies that never find their cadence, to the melodies that twist together like a run on sentence. Unsteady rhythms deny rhythmic equilibrium outlined by textural contrasts that exist in a space of contradiction.
ABOUT FINDING FONDNESS
Commissioned by ABC classic as part of the 2023 composer commission fund and recorded in the ABC Studio’s in Ultimo alongside Sally Walker, Finding Fondness is a collection of 5 flute duets exploring The Emerald Ruby’s (Jennifer Hankin) lived experience as a late diagnosed Autistic individual. This body of work is an emotionally vulnerable sound based exploration of an increasingly common experience. Taking influence from Hankin’s vast and varied musical history “Finding Fondness” redefines the aesthetic and technical expectations of music made by two flutes.
