The rural healthcare workforce is composed of professionals and paraprofessionals who deliver healthcare services to people living in rural areas. Barriers, including shortages of healthcare professionals, transportation challenges, and financial constraints, can prevent rural communities from developing and retaining a skilled workforce. The Rural Health Information Hub (RHIHub) and the NORC Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis developed a Rural Telehealth Toolkit, which includes important models for improving rural workforce development. In particular, it describes two telehealth models for promoting 1) workforce education and training and 2) workforce recruitment and retention. The toolkit highlights evidence-based and promising models that programs have utilized to improve workforce development in rural communities.
