Leading into the season, Ferrari were seen by many as Red Bull’s closest contenders this year. However, the race in Bahrain showed that Red Bull have increased their advantage both in terms of race and qualifying pace. Ferrari also experienced reliability issues. Their driver Carlos Sainz has spoken candidly about Ferrari’s situation

Ferrari Should Be Worried Suggests Sainz
Sainz started off by responding to whether he was surprised by not being able to hold on to the final podium place
“Not too much. I was actually surprised how long we were lasting in that position”
“From the test we knew that the Red Bulls and the Aston Martins just have a lot better deg [degredation], a lot better race pace than us”
“In the end we had to settle for P4, which to be honest is not a lot better than we could have done”
He added that this result is a reality check for Ferrari
“It’s a bit of a reality check, it’s where we are. We just used the tyres too much”
“As soon as I pushed to defend from Fernando, I cooked the tyres and then you need to start looking also to Lewis”
“We managed to hold Lewis off, but it gives us very little margin to play with in the race.”
He addressed Ferrari’s reliability issues next
“[It’s] not ideal the reliability, but more than that it worries me the gap to Red Bull and the race pace of Aston, which at the moment is faster”
He signed off by looking ahead to the future
“I don’t believe it will be like that at every race”
“A lot of work to do. We need to put our heads down, get the homework done and it’s only race one, so we still have margin of improvement.”

For AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda “it’s very frustrating to just miss out on points”
His teammate Nyck de Vries explained that even though “points weren't possible, the mileage and experience will help [them] for the season”
Williams driver Alex Albon feels that “to get a point in the first race is pretty amazing”
“I’m super happy and super proud of the team”
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly suggested that they “have a good base and it’s important we now build on that”
Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas explained that it was “important for [teammate] Zhou to get the fastest lap right at the end to steal the point from our competition”
“He did a good job and it shows how well we work as a team”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted that “the Aston Martins are very fast, and the Red Bull is just on a different planet”
“It hurts that they are so far ahead”
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated “I've got to stay positive, keep my head up and keep pushing the Team”
“I will be a positive light for them and get the best points I can”
Teammate George Russell pointed out that “Bahrain is an outlier circuit”
“But performance isn't going to swing more than three tenths positively or negatively from track to track”
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur accepted that they “have to improve a lot in terms of tyre management”
“And clearly, we have to ensure we have no more reliability issues“
