The Land Cruiser once thought to be gone for good, has made a triumphant return to the scene. Toyota surprised us all by resurrecting this off-road legend, and it's making a bold statement. Sharing a platform with the recently revamped Lexus GX, the Land Cruiser boasts a ruggedly boxy design and packs a punch with a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 326 horsepower. (In contrast, the Lexus GX employs a 3.4-liter, 349-hp turbo V-6.)

The iconic Land Cruiser has returned for the 2024 model year, showcasing a thoroughly modernized platform. Embracing hybrid power and a more compact form, it aims to rival the challenging off-road contenders presented by Ford and Jeep.

Unlike its previous larger iteration, the new Land Cruiser has been downsized to a medium-sized SUV, positioning itself to take on prominent off-road contenders like the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler. This strategic move also paves the way for Toyota's full-size SUV, the Sequoia. Inside the Land Cruiser's cabin, you'll find comfortable seating for five spread across two rows, complete with modern infotainment technology to satisfy today's tech-savvy drivers. Toyota has even included advanced driver-assistance features, acknowledging that for many Land Cruiser owners, this vehicle serves both as a weekend adventurer and a weekday commuter.

When the call of the wild beckons, the Land Cruiser is prepared with all the necessary tools to conquer challenging terrains. Its four-wheel-drive system comes with low-range gearing and a locking differential, ensuring it's ready for serious off-road action. Keep an eye out for the highly anticipated Land Cruiser to make its way to dealerships in the upcoming spring of 2024. It's a comeback that off-road enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting.

Under the hood, this new Land Cruiser generation adopts a contemporary approach, opting for a turbocharged hybrid powertrain over the conventional naturally-aspirated V-8 engine. The combination of a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and dual electric motors culminates in a robust output of 326 horsepower. This powertrain configuration shares similarities with the setup found in the Toyota Tacoma. Complementing the power plant is an eight-speed automatic transmission and a comprehensive four-wheel drive system. This system incorporates a locking center differential, low-range gearing, crawl control, and hill descent control, ensuring exceptional off-road capabilities. Stay tuned for our firsthand driving impressions and comprehensive instrumented testing, as we'll update this account with our findings after experiencing the Land Cruiser in action.

While Toyota has not yet disclosed specific fuel economy figures for the Land Cruiser, anticipations are high for significantly improved numbers compared to the previous-generation V-8 variant. Our own assessment of the Land Cruiser's efficiency will be conducted when we embark on our 75-mph highway fuel economy evaluation. Subsequently, we will enrich this narrative with the actual real-world outcomes of our test. For comprehensive insights into the Land Cruiser's fuel efficiency metrics, we encourage you to refer to the EPA's official website.

In contrast to its prior U.S. market presence with a starting price of $87,030, Toyota has now positioned the Land Cruiser at a more appealing entry point in the mid-$50,000 range. This adjustment aligns with the Land Cruiser's sleeker design and five-passenger capacity. While exact pricing details are yet to be unveiled, it appears that the mid-range Land Cruiser trim stands out as a favorable choice. This variant adds notable features like ventilated front seats, a 10-speaker sound system, an expanded 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and broader all-terrain tires, enhancing its overall value proposition.
