Choose a high quality piece of music recorded to a click with clear percussive transients at least 2.5 minutes in duration. When music is created to a click you can get the first few measures and then it should line up perfectly for the entire time. Create a tempo map by finding the first few measures. The tempo should then respond to the elastic audio changes so the click should play in time with the changes.
Find the BPM value of your track by using Tap Tempo or Identify Beat
Tap Tempo: 1) uncheck the conductor on the transport 2) click into the tempo number area in transport 3) click the “T”key to tap the tempo. This will get your very close to the tempo of the session, then manually program the tempo back in conductor tempo mode. Make sure to check with your click.
Identify beat: 1) make a 2 - 4 bar selection, and make sure it’s perfectly loopable 2) Event / Identify beat 3) choose a down beat to the nearest measure such as 1|1|000 to 5|1|000 for a four bar loop, click OK. Note the tempo identified after you have calculated the beat. 4) erase all tempo markings by selecting and deleting in the tempo ruler 5) program the new tempo change on beat 1.
Start by separating out the clips (b) for the various tempo operations. You will speed up, slow down, double time, half time, drop beats, and add beats. Leave about 8 measures in each clip separation.
Analyze the music in polyphonic mode. Using a combination of analysis and warp view. Click on the event markers with the grabber to turn them into warp markers. See lecture notes for more detail on setting warp markers. You will need to use control + click with the grabber to add a warp marker to the edge of a clip.
Drop markers at the various parts (bars:beats) where you will change the tempo. The markers should allow you to perform the various operations:
1) Double Time - increase the speed by 2
2) Half Time - reduce the BPM by 1/2
3) Speed Up - four measure ramp up each measure gets a bit faster, and arrive at a new tempo at least 20 BPM faster
4) Slow Down - four measure slow down, each measure gets a bit slower, and arrive at a new tempo at least 20 BPM faster
5) Truncate the beat to make the meter something other than 4/4 for at least 4 measures, i.e. if the meter was at 4/4 it may now be in ⅞ if you chop off an eighth note, or ¾ if you chop off a quarter note.
6) Elongate the beat, add an additional eighth or quarter note. Make the meter something other than 4/4 for at least four measures.
