Pro Tools Elastic audio, TCE trimmer
TCE trimmer is good for short little things. It’s doesn’t work well for longer regions, or changing the timing of a continuous clip at multiple points.
Hack: use the TCE trimmer on midi clips for making poly rhythms, super cool use of this tool
Within the context of music editing we need more tools that are built for changing the audio in more complex ways.
Time Base Selector on an audio track.
Tick Based or Sample based?
Audio is usually sample based
Midi is usually tick based
Elastic Audio
Click the elastic audio plugin selector (triangle with the line at the bottom) and choose an analysis mode
2) Click the track view selector, and choose “warp view”,
double click with the grabber to turn analysis markers into warp markers. Think of these warp markers as ways to pin down the audio, shift click to create three warp markers.
Polyphonic - chords, stereo files, complete mixes
Rhythmic - percussive sounds with clear transients
Monophonic - one voice, one note at a time
Varispeed - speeds up or slows down over time, the pitch changes in relaiton to tempo
X-Form - render only
(four realtime engines and one render only
Two main track views
Analysis
Warp view
Right click on track / View elastic properties / pitch shift
When a clip has been altered the top right of the clip that looks like a triangle with a line sticking out of it.
Event markers - grayed out, where PT’s thinks the transients are.
Warp markers - solid black and with a blue triangle
To add more warp makers, use the grabber tool to
turn an event marker into a warp marker:
Single-click on any event marker to the left of the first warp marker you added
Double-click on any event marker to the right of that first warp maker you added.
Control-click (or right click) the desired location to add a new warp marker
Shift click an event marker, to create three warp markers
Right click on audio and choose “conform to tempo” After audio has been analyzed
Analysis markers
Double click analysis markers with the grabber tool to make them into warp markers
In analysis mode alt+click to remove
Change track to warp view
Warp markers - double click with grabber
Warp markers are like anchors, they tell Pro Tools to pin down the audio at a certain point and drags things left or right but keep the audio at the warp markers fixed.
When you get a red clip, it means you may have stretched beyond what sounds decent.
