Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video I discuss what ultra-diffuse galaxies are.

Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) are a rare type of galaxy that can be distinguished from more common types, like spirals and ellipticals the following properties:

UDGs are unusually faint despite their large size, with their stars spread so thinly across vast areas that they are barely detectable. This gives them a "ghost-like" appearance, making them difficult to observe even with powerful telescopes. They can be as large as giant galaxies like the Milky Way, yet contain only a fraction of the stars. This leads to a diffuse, spread-out structure, unlike typical galaxies where stars are densely packed.

They are believed to be rich in dark matter, with some having up to 99% of their mass composed of dark matter. This hidden mass helps explain why they can remain gravitationally bound despite their sparse stellar populations.

UDGs are found in diverse locations, from dense galaxy clusters to isolated regions of space. This range of environments suggests multiple formation pathways, such as tidal disruption, gas stripping, or failed galaxy formation.

The exact process behind UDG formation remains unclear. Some theories suggest they are “failed” galaxies that lost the gas needed for star formation early on, while others propose they were formed in massive dark matter halos, preventing further development.
